What is HEIC, and why won't it open?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the format modern iPhones use by default. It stores the same photo at roughly half the file size of JPG, which is great for your phone's storage, but many Windows apps, older devices, web forms, and messaging tools still don't recognise it, so the photo appears broken or won't upload.

Why do my iPhone photos have a .heic extension?
Newer iPhones save photos as HEIC by default because it stores the same image quality at about half the size of JPG. The trade-off is that many non-Apple apps and sites don't support it yet.
Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?
There's a small, usually invisible re-encoding step because JPG is a different codec. For everyday sharing, printing, and uploads the result looks identical to the original.
Are my photos uploaded anywhere permanent?
No. Each photo is processed over HTTPS and deleted immediately after conversion, with an hourly sweeper as a backstop. Nothing is stored or used to train anything.
